Twelve teams entered. Only one would come out with the coveted golden helmets.

Eugene’s Summer in the City 2011 downtown dodgeball tournament was held last night in Kesey Square, where scores of people turned out to play, watch, wear pink and donate to Eugene Komen Race for the Cure.

Team CAWOOD was on hand for the second year in a row, looking to improve upon last year’s near-playoff run. And improve they did.

Led by captain and graphic designer Paul Adkins, team CAWOOD quietly but convincingly put together a string of victories to secure a second seed in the DDFF (downtown dodgeball final four). CAWOOD entered the playoff round with a gritty determination and solid plan of attack (i.e. really no plan at all) which would end up paying dividends.

After beating the # 3 seeded team, CAWOOD squared off for supremacy against the upstart #4 seeded Aquatics Specimens. The Specimens were a tough group but CAWOOD (Paul, Dana, Nichole, Charlie, Lindsey, Brent, Kurt, Cory, Jeff, and Mike) threw, caught, and dodged their way to a nearly flawless performance. After 8 grueling minutes, the whistle sounded. Team CAWOOD had won the match and with it, secured their place in history as the 2011 DDC (Downtown Dodgeball Champions).

The official 2011 DDC gold helmets are proudly on display throughout the CAWOOD office.

See you in 2012.
